During this tour, we will admire the majestic Vilcanota Mountain Range, with its imposing snow-capped peaks that dominate the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We will visit the picturesque village of Maras, where the houses still preserve their colonial facades. We will explore the archaeological complex of Moray, composed of circular terraces that were used as agricultural laboratories in Inca times. We will finish the experience appreciating the Maras salt mines, formed by hundreds of small salt water pools where the local community still produces salt.

Moray :

Several archaeologists and anthropologists maintain that the ruins of Moray were used for agricultural experiments. Some of the evidence includes an extensive irrigation system on the terraces, fed by a reservoir in the mountains.

A particularly interesting aspect is the temperature variation between the terraces. From the highest to the lowest terrace, the temperature differs by approximately 5°C, and the sun strikes each at a different angle and intensity.

The microclimate of Moray probably allowed the Incas to research and determine the optimal conditions for the growth of various crops, using their deep knowledge of the environment and taking advantage of the natural resources available.

Salt mines of Maras :

The Maras salt ponds comprise more than 3,000 natural salt ponds near the town of Maras. Each one has a surface area of approximately 5 square meters.

These pools are fed by a subway hypersaline spring that originated 110 million years ago, during the formation of the Andes.

Today, these natural salt pools attract numerous tourists, offering breathtaking scenery. The community of Maras continues to market this salt, maintaining a tradition that dates back to Inca times.
